What to Do if Your Pet Is Having an Emergency
Stay Calm - Try to remain calm and be extra cautious around your pet. They may experience pain, which can make them feel scared and behave unpredictably.
Call Ahead - If your pet needs urgent care during business hours, call us immediately. We will do our best to accommodate them quickly. If we’re unable to see your pet, we recommend visiting the 24/7 emergency hospital listed above.
Follow the Provided Instructions - When you call the veterinary hospital, they may give first aid instructions to keep your cat or dog comfortable. Follow their guidance closely.

What is the difference between urgent and emergency veterinary care?
Urgent veterinary care is for conditions that are serious but not immediately life-threatening to your pet. Contact Downtown Veterinary Clinic for urgent care by appointment during our regular office hours.
Emergency veterinary care, on the other hand, is for conditions that need immediate treatment in order to save your pet's life. For emergencies, contact the 24/7 emergency animal hospital listed above.

What situations require immediate care?
We understand that it can be challenging to know when urgent or emergency care is required for your pet. The following are examples of situations in which you need to seek care for your pet:
- Severe bleeding or bleeding that doesn't stop
- Obvious signs of pain or extreme anxiety
- Choking, difficulty breathing, or continuous coughing/gagging
- Fractured bones or severe lameness
- Seizures and/or staggering
- Bleeding from the nose, mouth, rectum, or blood in the urine
- Inability to urinate or pass feces, or pain associated with urinating or passing feces
- Severe vomiting or diarrhea; 2+ episodes in 24-hours
- Injuries to the eye(s)
- Your pet has ingested something poisonous (such as antifreeze, xylitol, chocolate, rodent poison, etc)
- Heat stress or heatstroke
- Refusal to drink for 24 hours or more
- Unconsciousness

Yes, absolutely. We will do our best to accommodate care for your pet, but calling ahead ensures we will be ready to help.
If we are unable to fit your pet into our schedule, we recommend that you visit a local emergency veterinary hospital.
